Regarding Christians and their history, as a daughter of a former pastor (fundamental, evangelical), I got to look at a lot of Christian history that is kept well under a lid by the denomination's leaders (and others also). 

One of the main reason there has been a backlash against Christians is the centuries-long history of slaughters and persecutions against those who did not "fit" well (didn't have the right creed or were not part of the denomination in the governmental power or were Jews or Muslims).
