Saw a great quote today

Saw a great quote today: "A good scapegoat is nearly as welcome as a solution to the problem."  In fact, I would say that among politicians, particularly as we are gearing up for elections, a scapegoat is better than a solution, because it distracts the voters.

Rules of the road, part 2

The drive home yesterday after work reminded me of one other little known traffic rule:  the part of the streets downtown to the extreme right, you know, where there are lines for parking places?  That is NOT a right-turn lane.  I know it just grates on your nerves to have to sit behind me for a few seconds until the light changes and I go through, and you're not in anybody's way if you come up beside me through the parking places and turn right on red, right?

Rules of the road

Here is some driving information about Newton of which many people seem unaware:

1. The speed limit on 1st St from approximately Grandview to Meridian is 40 miles per hour (not 30 and certainly not 25).  The speed limit on Broadway from approximately a block or two west of Grandview to Meridian is 35.  The speed limit on 12th St is 30, however, even when there is no traffic and it is nice and wide and you want to go faster.

Smoke in the sky

As I turned south on Meridian yesterday, I was confronted with a huge black cloud of smoke.  I realized I was seeing the smoke from Barton Solvents in Valley Center and was amazed at how big the cloud was even this far away.

Fireworks

I've never been a big Chisholm Trail Festival fan (just not my kind of thing), and this year I was out-of-town on Saturday and spent most of Sunday involved in a patriotic program of music at my church.  However, I have gone to the fireworks a couple of times, and this year, I gotta say, the fireworks were spectacular.  I love sitting in the bleachers rather than the grass (allergic), and there was a lovely breeze (I know people miss those trees, but it does increase the breezes from the south).  Best of all, the fireworks were just gorgeous!

Changes in "Voices"

It will be interesting to see how the experiment progresses.  When Doug Anstaett was here to speak at Peace Connections' annual meeting, someone asked him about columns such as "Voices."  His comments were not favorable, to say the least.  For one thing, he objected to the anonymity of the statements. I do think the anonymity tends to promote gossip and innuendo.

Greatest Dad story

I haven't bothered responding to the request for greatest dad stories, nor did I respond to the greatest mom stories.  This is sort of like certain recipes--chili and potato salad particularly come to mind--"mine is the best, and yours may be okay for you, but..."  And nothing anyone says will change your mind, and why should it?  Isn't the ideal parent-child relationship such that every child thinks his/her parent is the best?  At least, every adult child.  We all go through that age when our parents are unbelievably out-of-touch ("square" we used to say in th

Breaking news

Thanks to The Kansan for posting an update on what the helicopter was doing in town this morning.  I work not far from the mill, so naturally we heard the helicopter and wondered what was going on.  My thoughts and prayers are with the injured man and his family.

Newton ads on TV

So does anyone else find it somewhat disconcerting to have your home town sold on TV just like toothpaste or Viagra?  Don't get me wrong, I think they're pretty good commercials, I just think it's weird to market a town that way.  Would anyone really choose to live in Newton based on seeing an ad on TV?

Here's a quote to ponder

"Jesus was not killed by atheism and anarchy. He was brought down by law and order allied with religion, which is always a deadly mix. Beware those who claim to know the mind of God and who are prepared to use force, if necessary, to make others conform. Beware those who cannot tell God's will from their own.
