Shut up and drive!

I've remained pretty silent over the past few weeks — in part because my schedule has been waaaaay out of control, and in part because the only thing I've really had on my mind is the whole smoking debate.

I'm sick of the whole thing. Can we move on to something else?

How about this one — GET OFF THE PHONE AND DRIVE!

I am so tired of following a slow poke, or someone not using their turn signals, only to see them chatting away on the phone while driving.

It can wait! For crying out loud, that converstation can wait. And if it can't, pull over!

It's time for Jack-O-Lanterns

Here at the Kansan we're launching a pumpkin carving contest, wich I think is a cool idea. I decided, for the first time since I was a wee one, to make a jack-o-lantern. Granted, I can't win the $25, $15 or $10 prize offered in the online contest. But, I figure some roasted pumpkin seeds (one of my favorite snacks) is reward enough.

The night we were waiting for

Often when you have high expectations and high hopes they are dashed, things just don't turn out the way you anticipate.

But last night was not one of those times. Last night I watched my good friend Tony Brown and local folk artist Tommy Sands perform at a social club in the heart of Loyalist territory at an event that really was special.

Alan Bell, the organizer of the event, said during his introduction of the artists that "this really is something that could not have happened even three months ago."

An observation from Northern Ireland

There is something I have noticed about the U.K. and Nor Ire — they don't seem to be terribly concerned about being politically correct when it comes to warnings.

Take, for example, the warnings they place on cigarette boxes. Much, much different than the small print surgeon general warnings back home.

They take up about the bottom half of the pack, and convey strong messages. A pack of "Royals" I saw yesterday had "Smokers die younger" on the back, and "Smoking kills" on the front in big block letters.

Belfast update

It's been a couple of days since I have had the time, computer and connection all at once to set some lines and let you all know how things are going here in Nor' Ire'.

I took a day and walked around Belfast - put a lot of miles on the shoe leather. My right foot is reminding me today just how much walking I have done since I entered this fine country.

Getting ready for an adventure today

Good morning! Today promises to be a wonderful day -- the weather is crisp and I will be exploring today. Today Tony is singing in a prision, and regretably we could not get me permission to take pictures of the performance. Today I will be striking out on my own for a bit.

We are staying in a suburb called Dunmurry, anout 5 miles from Belfast city center. So today I am going to learn a bit about the public transit here, taking the train to downtown and exploring the downtown area. I really, really look forward to exploring a bit, and I hope I do not get too lost!

Hanging with the wee lads and lassies

I'm having a wonderful time thus far in Belfast. Today Tony sang at
Dunbury School -- an intergrated school that has both prods and catholics,
along with several ethinic groups and nationalities attending. There's
about 150 students in grades K through 7.

It was fun to be there, the kiddos were all really excited about
hearing Tony. He sang there two years ago -- the students who were not there
had heard about it.

Smelling the (Irish) roses

The first day in Belfast was a relaxing one, though it came at the end of 15 hours of traveling. It seems the best way to adjust to the local time zone - six hours different than home - is to not sleep immediately after getting here. We instead spent time with our hosts, for me a time to getting to know the Bell family and for Tony a time of reunion.

Today -- Airports

This is what they cal anticipation -- sitting in the airport waiting for the first flight of the day. Today is day one of the trek to Belfast, a two-week trip with Tony Brown to Belfast.

Politics the way they should be

When the county commission meeting was over Monday night, Jeff Couchman, who lives on Southwest 24th, went to the commissioners and shook their hands.

He thanked them for making what was a difficult decision -- a decision that ultimately did not go the way he wanted.
